WELCOME TO PETALUMA!
Petaluma, the name originated with the Coastal Miwok Indians, the early residents of our area, and the name Petaluma, meaning "Valley of the little hills". Petaluma was spared by the 1906 earthquake and has a rare collection of Victorian homes and many Iron Front commercial buildings in its downtown. Every year there is a self-guided walking tour of many of the Historic homes.
Petaluma is located approximately 35 miles North of San Francisco, and it is within an easy drive to the local beaches, redwoods, wineries and many Historic sites.
Petaluma's cultural history and character are defined by its river and offers a variety of leisure and recreational uses - in addition to its scenic beauty. Residents and visitors can enjoy access to boating and rowing sports, hiking trails, bicycle paths, parks bird watching, wetlands and historic sites along the river. Petaluma also has many parks surrounding the city that are excellent for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Petaluma has become an Art Lover's destination with its many Art Galleries and Antique shops. The Historic Depot building is now the home to the newly opened Petaluma Art's Center, along with the Petaluma Visitor's Center. Petaluma has over 140 restaurants of all kinds and are listed by type and style in the Petaluma Visitors program.
